Our History

The origin of a legacy

The history of this space begins with its founder, Hernán Curipoma, who started working in mining at an early age as a laborer. After his arduous workday, he empirically began repairing the carbide lamps inherited from the mining companies operating in Zaruma and Portovelo.

Noticing the extremely high demand for these tools and the lack of a factory in the country, he dared to make them by hand. Thus, around 1995, lamps were born under the brand HERCURSA (an acronym for Hernán Curipoma). These pieces faced the darkness of the mines for years, supplying the local and national market, until they were replaced by modern technology.

A hand-forged dream

He took this first big step alone, hoping that one day it would become a solid family project. Zaruma has been a mining town for thousands of years, so its people have this vocation in their blood. Hernán's dedication and his experience underground were the inspiration to start making mining crafts using natural quartz.

However, he envisioned something missing: a space that would connect the community with its roots and allow recreating the activity that has defined the life of the province.

The evolution towards the museum

Rescuing invaluable ancient pieces and adding an impressive collection of natural crystals and gold, on July 8, 2023, the Curipoma Mining Museum formally opened its doors as the greatest legacy for Zaruma.
